Impact Church shared this sermon summary from the recording, “Join Pastor Sejana Yoo as she delves into Matthew 5:38-48, part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus outlines radical principles like turning the other cheek and loving your enemies. She explores the context behind these teachings, shares personal anecdotes, and discusses how figures like Cesar Chavez and Civil Rights activists have embodied these principles. The sermon challenges us to embrace ‘next level living’ by following Jesus’ command to love and act non-violently, even in the face of oppression and injustice.”
I preached this sermon for my home church were I serve as the Connections Pastor at Impact Temple Church, in Temple, Texas located about an hour north of Austin and 2 hours south of Dallas/Fort Worth. I only preached half of my sermon though (the eye for (an) eye portion)! I mentioned a commentary by David Garland on “Reading Matthew.”
Tune in below to watch a recording of the sermon (or podcast) and scroll down even further to watch my ‘After Sermon Preaching Tips‘ video where I’m keeping up my routine of sharing a few thoughts after I preach (right before I walk back into my home from my car!).
I am always hopeful that these offerings would bless and encourage you in your own journey with God and in your ministry of service to others. Feel free to reach out to me or leave a comment below, anytime. Blessings and peace!
Matthew 5:38-48 (NIV)
Eye for Eye
38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’[h] 39 But I tell you, do not resist an evil person. If anyone slaps you on the right cheek, turn to them the other cheek also. 40 And if anyone wants to sue you and take your shirt, hand over your coat as well. 41 If anyone forces you to go one mile, go with them two miles. 42 Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you.
Love for Enemies
43 “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor[i] and hate your enemy.’ 44 But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous. 46 If you love those who love you, what reward will you get? Are not even the tax collectors doing that? 47 And if you greet only your own people, what are you doing more than others? Do not even pagans do that? 48 Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect.
