Reflections from the border – summer intern FSW

I’d love to hear your thoughts from my article posted under the nonprofit organization called Fellowship Southwest (FSW). If you subscribe to their newsletter, each week on Thursday, you’ll get snapshots of the latest happenings in Fellowship Southwest and get to know what they do. One of the big things they are doing this summer is sponsoring 4 interns- and I am one of them! I submitted the first article and Thursday, you will hear from a different intern. Also, since I didn’t know what I would write about until I started writing, I actually recorded a video in the location mentioned in the article. I’ll share that soon since it’s more like a VLOG with a different perspective but the same location (and people).

I enjoyed the post. It felt really relatable.

Right after college, my wife and I lived for two years in Chemnitz, Germany, working alongside a mission team and a small church. If I have any particular skills, they’re in communication: I can speak well, write competently, listen and engage others in conversation. So this was really challenging, because we were learning German, and in the blue-collar city where we were working, not a lot of people spoke English. So I really connected with your experiences of communicating with immigrants and refugees across that language barrier.

Some of what you shared also reminded me of Impact and our agencies that are working together to serve our unhoused community. There aren’t enough resources, people lack what they need for self-advocacy, the systems in place are inadequate, etc. And then we find ourselves starved for resources sometimes, so that—like the facility with too few baskets—we run into these moments of frustration. I like how worked through that frustration and how you found yourself able to align with the marginalized when you couldn’t find the basket you needed.

It sounds like you’re doing great work. I’m not familiar with Fellowship Southwest, so I’ll check them out online. And I’m looking forward to connecting with you when you get back into town.

Do not grow weary in doing good work!
